“Big, beautiful rock-band sounds” - BBC Introducing in Oxfordshire & Berkshire
Wilderness States is a five-piece atmospheric alt-rock band hailing from Oxfordshire, known for their rich soundscapes and energetic performances. Dubbed "stadium indie" by local music publications, the band consists of Shauna Reed (vocals/synth), David Freeman (guitars/keyboard), Szabolcs Máthé, aka Matty (guitars), Kieran Spriggs (bass), and Simon Talbot (drums/percussion).
The band’s formation story is, in their own words, "an absolute mess," but it’s one filled with serendipitous connections. Members have played in notable Oxford bands such as Ideal Marriage, Ciphers and Lowws, and Shauna joined the lineup after relocating to Oxford from London. Together, they’ve created a distinctive sound that combines atmospheric intensity with poignant and ethereal moments.
Since their inception, Wilderness States has graced the stages of iconic Oxford venues such as The O2 Academy, The Library, The Port Mahon, The Jericho Tavern and many local festivals, as well as playing gigs further afield in Reading and London. While they’ve yet to conquer stadiums, their music has already made waves, with their six singles to date receiving rave reviews and earning airplay on BBC Introducing Oxfordshire, Amazing Radio and Get Radio amongst others.
Their sound is best described as a fusion of alt-rock and post-rock, driven by intricate rhythms, powerful and soaring vocals, and a balance of intensity and beauty. Fans of Radiohead, Foals, Wolf Alice and Sharon Van Etten will feel right at home with Wilderness States’ evocative sound.
Wilderness States is building momentum and proving that stadiums might just be their next stop.
